Hall of Arches

The Hall of Arches, located at the entrance of the Fortress, was the main storage facility for the garrison. The structure, characterized by pillars and arches, recalls the 18th-century warehouses of the nearby Venezia district, designed to accommodate large quantities of materials. The original access was not the current one: the area of the square, now open, was a defensive outwork that preceded the protected entrance to the Fortress, the Gallery from which one accesses the internal parts. At that time, the warehouse could only be accessed from within, in the wing of the Fortezza Nuova where the former internal barracks, the accommodations, and the kitchens were located. The Hall of Arches was the largest storage area of the Fortezza Nuova and the logistical center of the entire garrison.
