Hall of the Oven

At the end of the 18th century, this hall housed two large military ovens, used to ensure food autonomy for the garrison. The ample dimensions were necessary to store flour and supplies, essential for producing bread, the staple of the troops’ diet. Each fortress had its own oven, indispensable in case of sieges or isolation. Bread accompanied the simple cuisine of the time – soups, broths, and basic foods – representing the most substantial and daily food for the soldiers. The hall thus testifies to the importance of the Fortress as a self-sufficient and organized stronghold for military life.
