The Walkways and the Garitas
On the inner side of the fortress runs the walkway, oriented westward towards the city center. While to the east there are earthworks on which cannons could be placed to defend against external attacks, on this side the walkway was intended for the control of the city and to avoid potential internal uprisings. For this reason, muskets were used more than cannons, and the battlements with the loopholes along the walls allowed soldiers to monitor the urban area.
The Fortezza Nuova originally had a garita at each corner, with small side openings that allowed soldiers to observe both the outside and nearby positions. Each was topped with a bell tower with an alarm bell.
The guard shifts lasted about four hours and did not include patrols: the protruding garitas allowed for extensive control while remaining sheltered from bad weather. Today, two have been preserved, recently reconstructed.
